Do You Need a Heavy-Duty 2500 or a Half-Ton 1500 Truck?
Deciding what kind of full-size truck to buy can be a tedious process. Do you want a half-ton 1500 or a heavy-duty three-quarter-ton/one-ton 2500/3500? It really boils down to what types of capabilities you’re looking for in a truck. If you are intending on towing a lot of heavy items like yachts, farm equipment, heavy machinery, or large recreational trailers, you’ll want to look at 2500 and 3500 trucks. However, if you’re occasionally towing modest-sized campers or work trailers, then a 1500 might be just fine.
What Can a Half-Ton 1500 Truck Tow?
A 1500 truck will afford you the ability to tow most things up to about 10,000 or so pounds, give or take. This means you can reasonably have four passengers and their luggage and still tow an 18- or 22-foot boat. However, it should be noted that many trucks buyers only tow occasionally and instead prioritize the spacious interior, cargo-carrying bed, great looks, and on-road presence that trucks offer.

How About a Heavy-Duty Pickup?
A heavy-duty truck can tow up to about 20,000 or more pounds, which is a ton of weight. Some people like 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty pickups because they feel extra-large and they make them feel like they’ll be able to stretch out more. But, keep in mind, these trucks can be less convenient to drive in congested areas and can be harder to park in tight parking lots.

All of the Brands Are Somewhat Equal
Once you determine you need a full-size truck, then it’s time to decide between Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, and Ram if you are comparing 1500 to 2500. If you have decided that you just want a 1500, then you can add Toyota and used Nissans into the mix. Each manufacturer makes a quality truck. It comes down to personal preference (for the exterior looks and the interior fit and finish), engine options, and specific features.
Fuel Economy
When it comes to fuel economy, a 1500 pickup will get you around 20 mpg on the highway with about 17 or so in the city. Stepping up to a 2500 may not impact fuel economy as much as you might assume; heavy-duty trucks aren’t EPA-rated. Today’s heavy-duty diesel trucks are rather fuel efficient.

Cost
A used mid- to high-trim level 1500 pickup truck could run you $20,000 to $35,000, depending on year and mileage. An equivalent heavy-duty truck with similar mileage and options could start around $30,000 and go up to $50,000 or more. If it has a diesel engine, then you’ll pay a premium for that no matter the mileage.
