Fun Cars For Under $10K

September 20th, 2025 by

These days, it’s easy to look at YouTube and see all the fun, expensive sports cars people are buying wrecked for cheap and fixing up. We all want a piece of that pie, but what if there were a way to spend $10,000 on really good, reliable sports cars that you don’t have to worry about spending precious time and money fixing up? Here’s a list of five cars that will fit any budget and still afford you the ability to have fun without going wrong and being catastrophically expensive to fix.

NB Mazda MX-5 Miata

The second-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata, or the NB chassis, was on sale from 1999-2005 and is one of the absolute best sports car bargains of any era. The best-selling roadster of all time, and arguably the only true sports car as originally defined on the market today (small, two-seat convertible). It was amazing brand new, and it’s just as amazing today. With its small 1.8-liter inline-4 that produces anywhere from 140 to 144 horsepower and 119 to 125 lb-ft of torque, depending on the year, the Miata is the most fun car at moderate speeds you’ll ever experience. While the car was available with a 4-speed automatic, it’s best to skip it and stick with the 5-speed manual. On the major plus side, good-to-great tires will only run you about $500-$700, depending on how extreme you want them to be.

What To Look Out For

Remember, these cars are older now, so maintenance is key. And it’s important to have a quality and trustworthy independent shop, like Alderman Automotive, check the car out before you buy it. The soft top could develop a leak over time, and the rocker panels, rear wheel arches, and front frame rails are susceptible to rust depending on where the car has lived its life. Luckily, there are plenty of NBs out there to buy, so don’t fret if you have to pass on one. More so, just typing into Google “NB Miata common problems” or “NB Miata reliability” will bring up plenty of commentary on the Miata forums and Miata Subreddit. With all of that said, there is no shortage of cheap and easy modifications you can do to make a Miata even more fun than it already is.

Difference Between a Muscle Car and A Pony Car

Before we move on to the next car, we need to clarify the difference between a muscle car and a pony car. A muscle car is a mid-size car with a large engine, such as a Dodge Charger/Challenger, the Pontiac GTO (the first-ever muscle car), A Chevy Chevelle, and the like. Muscle cars are more straight-line monsters. A pony car is a smaller coupe that handles well and has a V8. The Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, and Pontiac Firebird are pony cars because of their size and better handling abilities.

S197 Ford Mustang

With that being said, you can’t talk about muscle cars (albeit incorrectly) or pony cars without bringing up the Ford Mustang. The first-ever pony car has gone on to become one of the best-selling vehicles ever made, and it’s been going strong since the 1964.5 model debuted in 1964. For $10,000, you can easily find yourself a good ol’ S197 chassis, which is the fifth-gen model. It was available from 2005 until 2014, but we’re focusing on the ‘05 up to ‘10 cars with the tried and true 4.6-liter V8 that delivered 300 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque from 2005-2009, and 315 horses and 325 torque for 2010, the final year of the 4.6.

Manual Is the Only Way

Again, skip the automatic. It’s not great, it’s laggy, and extremely boring. The 5-speed Tremec TR3650 manual offers excellent control, especially if you’re keeping the car stock. If you plan on adding horsepower mods, then start with beefing up the transmission first. Other than that, add some bigger rubber; typically, a square setup of 255mm tires all around will quickly transform the handling.

What To Watch Out For

When buying the manual model, make sure to run through all the gears, as, depending on mileage, it is very possible the synchros are worn out and need to be replaced. A Mustang is meant to be driven hard and enjoyed, but some owners don’t necessarily keep up with the maintenance, so make sure you either get some records or do preventative maintenance when you buy the car. The 4.6-liter can develop some noise due to timing chain wear. While Ford says they’re meant to last the life of the engine, it’s best to change them around 150,000 miles.

Trust Alderman Automotive to Take a Look for You

As we previously mentioned, have Alderman Automotive take a look at the car to make sure you’re getting the right one. It’s also cheap and easy to make these cars go faster and turn better, so don’t be afraid to enjoy them.

Honda Civic Si

Next on the list is another “slow” car that is extremely fun and good to drive. The 8th-gen Civic Si from 2006-2011 is a gem that can be had in two doors or four, and only with a really great shifting 6-speed manual transmission. Unlike many front-wheel drive cars, the Civic comes standard with a limited-slip differential, which is key to putting the meager power from its K20Z3 2.0-liter 197 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque to the pavement. VTEC kicks in above 5,800 rpm and will go all the way to an 8,000 rpm redline. Since the Si only weighs just shy of 2,900 lbs, fuel economy is good, and performance is very reasonable.

A Great Car That Has Few Common Problems

Be sure to drive the car up to higher revs in first gear and feel how well the shifter goes into second gear. If it has a hard time going in, you could be experiencing syncrhos issues, as this was a common problem in earlier models. Try to find a car that has not been extensively modified, as this can show how hard the car’s life has been. While the engines are typically seen as bulletproof, any car can fall apart when it’s not been taken care of.

Volkswagen GTI

One of the main competitors of the Honda Civic Si is the Mk5 VW GTI from 2006-2009, which can be had in either a 3-door or 5-door hatchback. Like the Honda, it, too, comes with a 2.0-liter direct injection turbo 4-cylinder that produces 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. The GTI comes in both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed DSG automatic. Lots of people will tell you to select the fast-shifting dual-clutch-style transmission, but we still say go for the manual as it’s far more engaging in this generation car.

What To Check

Check out the timing belt as it needs to be changed sooner rather than later to avoid a major failure. Watch out for rust in the front wheel arches. Luckily, if this is an issue, there are plenty of new and used fenders on the market. Check the condition of the air conditioning system by ensuring you have really cold AC. If it doesn’t, check the AC condenser and compressor, as there were some issues in this generation. Because of the direct-injected motor, the GTI has issues with carbon buildup on the intake valves. So, budget for Alderman Automotive to take care of this issue. It’s very common on all cars with direct-injected motors, so it’s an easy fix. You can even Google DIY kits to easily do it yourself.

Nissan 350Z

Last but certainly not least, the Nissan 350Z from 2003 until 2009 is one of the finest sports cars you can buy. It has excellent handling, is easy to modify, and has a robust engine. While there is an automatic available, don’t do it… It just isn’t fun. The 6-speed manual is fun and easy to drive. 2003-2006 The 3.5-liter VQ V6 produced 287 horsepower and 274 lb-ft of torque, while the updated 2007-2009 Z had 306 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. There were a couple of other special Z models, but we won’t talk about them as there’s no way they’ll be seen for $10,000 unless they’re missing half the body or an engine.

Common Problems to Watch Out For

Make sure to check the oil consumption, as these VQs can use some oil. Some owners have reported over the years that the throttle body gets carbon buildup and needs to be cleaned to keep the idle normal. Also, check out the exterior door handles to make sure they’re working properly, as they can break along with the actual internal latch mechanism.

Vetting Can Save You Money

As five of the better used sports cars that aren’t that expensive to buy and own, you should be able to find something you like among this group. Remember, a used car is only as good as its previous owners, so don’t just vet the car but also question the owner and how well they’ve maintained it. Try to get as many service records as you possibly can. And if you are buying it from a private party, have an independent mechanic or shop, such as Alderman Automotive, check out the vehicle for you.
