​​GM’s 10 coolest EV charging destinations for your next cross-country road trip​ 

The biggest strength of EVs is the ability to charge at home, so you have 200-300 miles ready for the day. When you come home hours later, you can repeat the cycle again, without a stop at a gas station, worrying about gasoline pricing, drivetrain maintenance, or even tailpipe emissions. EVs have not been seen as strong for long-distance drives because they require that need to recharge, as our continent’s EV infrastructure is still in its infancy, and charging times take longer than filling up a gas tank. 

 But the infrastructure is growing. GM, for instance, states that its EV owners have access to more than 250,000 public chargers across North America, and the company has invested in chargers at Pilot & Flying J truck stops, as well as EVgo, ChargePoint, and IONNA chargers across the US. Charging still takes longer, but GM points out that by choosing your charging stations in advance, charging can “offer opportunities to not only stretch your legs and get a snack, but also have some fun.” These are destination charging stations, if you will. GM has listed some of its favorites, which we repeat in this Alderman Automotive post.  

 Roughly from West to East, here is GM’s list of the 10 coolest places to explore while your EV is charging nearby. 

• EVgo: Portland, Maine
  This fast charger is nestled in the heart of one of New England’s most charming cities, near museums, cozy coffee spots, and some of the top places to enjoy a delicious lobster roll. It truly captures the best of the Northeast. 

• Electrify America: Georgetown, Washington, DC 
  Stop at Electrify America’s DC fast charging station near Georgetown and explore this beautiful historic neighborhood with its cobblestone streets and late 1700s/early 1800s architecture.  

• IONNA Rechargery: Apex, North Carolina 
  The IONNA DC fast-charging station in Apex, North Carolina, is right within walking distance to so many wonderful spots: a charming downtown, a friendly dog park, and an exciting skate park. With ultrafast DC charging speeds, you might find yourself amazed at how quickly you can charge up—sometimes so fast that you may not even have enough time to explore all the surrounding area. 

• IONNA at Wawa: Daytona Beach, Florida. 
  The IONNA fast-charging station is conveniently located in a spacious, contemporary shopping center near the Daytona International Speedway. When it’s not busy hosting the Daytona 500 or the 24 Rolex endurance race, the speedway draws many motorsports fans to its Motorsports Hall of Fame, where they can view treasured American racing artifacts, and explore the impressive facility. 

• EVgo: East St. Louis, Illinois
  This EVgo station has a beautiful across the Misissippi River view of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, lovingly known as the “gateway to the West,” has always been a memorable stop on many American road trips.  

• ChargePoint: Austin, Texas
  Austin, Texas, stands out as a city full of unique charm. This Chargepoint station can be found on Electric Drive, which conveniently takes you to a lovely park with walking and biking trails. Plus, you’re just a short drive from the lively heart of Downtown Austin. Don’t miss the nearby Congress Avenue Bridge, where, if you time it right, you can see the fascinating spectacle of the largest urban bat colony in the country. 

• Electrify America, in Moab, Utah
  Known for Arches National Park, this charming mountain town has long been a favorite spot for off-road enthusiasts and hikers alike. Electrify America has thoughtfully installed several DC fast chargers near the Moab mountains, close to trailheads, a boat launch, and camping spots. It’s truly one of the most stunning places in the world to charge your EV, making your adventure even more memorable. 

• ChargePoint: Jackson, Wyoming
  The Jackson Hole valley in Wyoming is famous for its ski resorts. In the charming town of Jackson, you’ll find a handy charging station that’s just a short walk from the slopes.  If you are there on the other side of the calendar, there’s a lively rodeo happening all summer long, making it a fantastic stop whether you’re headed to the stunning Grand Teton or the breathtaking Yellowstone National Parks. • EVgo: Sacramento, California
  This EVgo station is located in a lively parking lot filled with all kinds of unique shops, including paintball gear and anime souvenir shops. There’s also a welcoming art studio where you can explore your creativity and try your hand at ceramics, sculptures, and more. 

• Pilot Travel Center: Chemult, Oregon
  Located at the Pilot Travel Center, this EVgo charging station offers everything you need during a break from the road. The station in Chemult, Oregon, is close to beautiful hiking trails. 

The biggest difference when touring the US in an EV is that you should plan your EV stops in advance.  And the result of any pre-planning is that you can make the journey an enhancement to your overall trip.
