Myths Of Buying Used Cars

Buying a used car can almost feel like getting away with something. It is not hard, particularly at Alderman Automotive, to find a recent model that looks good and has the features you want, possibly even from a luxury brand, for a fraction of what you would pay for a similar new model. New car depreciation is the biggest cause, yet it can still feel like there has to be a catch. We intend to put to rest a variety of myths built around buying used cars. 

Used Cars Have Something Wrong With Them 

This comes from the thought that people only replace their cars if something is wrong with them, possibly hidden. This ignores the fact that people replace their cars for various reasons unrelated to the vehicle’s condition. Changes in life stage, vehicle needs, commuting, or just a feeling of gotta have it for a new model are some reasons people trade in their cars. Additions to the family require a bigger vehicle, or at least deem the convertible or sports coupe impractical. Empty nesters now find little need for their big vehicle; the list goes on. These used vehicles are not ticking time bombs, and if they are, our evaluators will spot the problems. 

Financing Options Are Limited 

Financing a used car can be as straightforward as financing a new one. Interest rates can be a little higher since the vehicle is collateral, but the cost is still far less than for a new vehicle. Used Cars Have Higher Insurance Rates 

Insurance rates are primarily determined by the vehicle’s value, the vehicle type, and the owner’s driving record. A high cost to repair may impact some models, but that will also be the case for new versions of that model. If you don’t trust an established insurer, we suggest you shop insurance for specific models to get a well-rounded picture of the relevant costs. 

Used Cars Are Less Safe 

While it is true that manufacturers regularly add new safety features as the years go by, most of the important ones have been around for a while and, thus, are likely to be on used models. Unless it borders on being classic, most used cars will have full sets of airbags, anti-lock brakes, and traction control. Alderman Automotive won’t sell a car with an outstanding recall on airbags or anything else. More modern driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist will likely be available on most models within the past few model years. 

Used Car Dealers Can’t Be Trusted

It Is Always Better To Buy New 

Buying a new car has its upside in terms of getting the latest features, warranty coverage, and even being able to choose your favorite color. However, the high depreciation of a new car may keep it from being the best financial decision (since you risk the possibility of being “upside down,” meaning the car is worth less than you owe). Used cars will have a lower purchase price and likely lower insurance rates, so you can either pay less for a used car or buy a new car—with the latest and greatest—for more money.
