There are two types of heavy-duty pickup trucks: anything with a 250 or 2500 is what used to be called a “three-quarter ton,” while anything with a 350, 3500, or higher is known as a “one-ton” truck. These terms no longer apply as payloads, and towing capacities are way above those figures.  

For example, the latest General Motors 3500HD pickup trucks can tow up to 36,000 pounds using either a gooseneck or a fifth-wheel towing connection. Ford’s F-450 Super Duty pickup trucks claim they can tow up to 40,000 pounds. Even with the Ford F-250 and Chevrolet or GMC 2500HD, or Ram 2500 Heavy Duty models, you can tow up to 16,000 pounds or more with just a conventional trailer hook-up.  

The key to towing anything is knowing how much you plan to tow and understanding the vehicle’s Gross Combined Weight Rating. Once you do the math, you can choose the right pickup truck for your summer fun.  

Towing is not the only thing you can do with a pickup truck this summer. Sometimes, fun means just getting out there and tackling a trail. Or a few obstacles off the highway. Recently, the pickup truck world has been growing to include some trim levels that are squarely focused on off-road adventure. Ford started it all with the full-size F-150 Raptor. Originally, they dropped a high-performance V8 engine, beefed up the suspension, and mounted some serious all-terrain tires for maximum excitement – all factory-equipped. More recent Raptors come with either a high-output twin-turbocharged V6 or a supercharged V8.
