Popular Opinion. It can be a helpful guidepost or a red flag. If it concerns a subject you know little about, popular opinion can be helpful in getting your footing. When you consider yourself an expert on a topic, like music, for instance, popular opinions may be of the red flag variety. If everybody likes it, it is perhaps not bold or challenging enough for your taste.

iSee CarsHowever, when it comes to cars and using data collected by automotive research firm iSeeCars, Alderman Automotive can give you the most popular used cars in Indiana from the 2023 model year.

When it comes to used cars, popularity can mean several things. The nice thing about used cars is that when new, manufacturers can price a vehicle however they think it will sell. However, when the cars return to the market, the public determines their value. Popularity indicates high demand, which can raise a vehicle’s value. It may also simply indicate that many of the vehicles were sold as new, and there are merely many of them on the market.  New and used vehicle popularity is related, but it does not always track together.

Used Chevrolet EquinoxThe iSeeCars data includes more than 9.8 million used car sales, and the figures are narrowed down to vehicles that are five years old or newer from when they were first sold.  With that, the five most popular used cars in Indiana were:

  1. Chevrolet Equinox
    – Share of statewide used car sales: 4.0%
  2. Chevrolet Silverado 1500
    – Share of statewide used car sales: 3.4%
  3. Ford F-150
    – Share of statewide used car sales: 3.2%
  4. Ram 1500
    – Share of statewide used car sales: 2.5%
  5. Ford Escape
    – Share of statewide used car sales: 2.3%

Used Ford EscapeFull-size pickup trucks always top new-vehicle sales, with the Ford F-150 almost always on top, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado and then the Ram 1500.  However, first-time purchasers often keep these vehicles longer than passenger car owners, which likely explains why they don’t make up the top three on this list.  The Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Escape are both compact crossovers, which is overall the most popular vehicle segment in the US.  The big trucks sell the most individually, but there are many more compact crossover models, and together, as a segment, they sell more vehicles than anything else.

The fact that the two crossovers represented here come from the two largest domestic car companies is no surprise, even though nationwide, the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are the best-sellers in the new car market. If you are curious how Indiana compared with the nation as a whole, from the same source, here were the best-selling 1-to-5-year-old vehicles in the US for 2023:

2023 Rank  Model  % of Total 1- to 5-year-old Used Car Sales
1  Ford F-150  3.3%
2  Chevrolet Silverado 1500  2.6%
3  Chevrolet Equinox  2.1%
4  Ram 1500  2.1%
5  Toyota Camry  1.8%
6  Honda Civic  1.7%
7  Toyota RAV4  1.7%
8  Toyota Corolla  1.5%
9  Ford Explorer  1.5%
10  Nissan Rogue  1.5%

The list still primarily consists of full-size trucks and compact crossovers, though sedans from Toyota and Honda have also made it to the top ten. The Ford Escape, which ranked 5th in Indiana, is 13th nationally.

None of this will likely alter what you want in your next used car. Still, it does make for an interesting reference point, and unsurprisingly, as of this writing, Alderman Automotive has 11 examples of Indiana’s top 5 in stock.  Of course, we also have plenty of models from brands like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus, Audi, and many other brands.  Speculating on the possibilities is what makes perusing the Alderman Automotive inventory so enjoyable.  We invite you to give it a try.
