Which Cars Are More Expensive To Insure

February 5th, 2026 by

Buying a new car is always a fun experience. However, sometimes the biggest letdown is when you realize how much your favorite or dream car will cost you every month in car insurance. It is essential to understand the insurance costs associated with purchasing a car, whether it is monthly, yearly, or every six months, depending on your specific plan.

Market Analysis According to MarketWatch

Using MarketWatch Guides, you can see which brands are both the most expensive and cheapest to insure according to insurance data. All data used in the article has been updated to reflect pricing as of July 2025. The company used information from USAA, State Farm, Erie Insurance, Travelers, and Geico for all car brands to ensure fairness. Let’s first take a look at the four most expensive brands to insure and then the four least expensive.

Data Used to Know Insurance Values

It is also worth noting that all averages are based on full coverage for a 35-year-old driver with good credit and a clean driving record. The estimates reflect the average cost of various cars within each brand. Additionally, USAA is specifically designed for active-duty military personnel, veterans, and their families.

Most Expensive to Insure #1: Dodge

The most expensive brand of cars to insure are produced by Dodge, with an average insurance rate of $354 per month or $4,242 for the year. According to MarketWatch, that is 74% higher than the $203 per month and $2,433 per year average for a full coverage plan nationally. Granted, some insurance companies have less costly insurance for a Dodge, such as Erie insurance at $199 per month and $2,388 for the year, while Geico ranks as the highest at $479 and $5,753 for the month and the year, respectively.

Most Expensive to Insure #2: Lexus

The second most costly brand to insure is Lexus. While the company produces some of the safest and most reliable luxury cars in the world, according to the data, they can also be expensive to insure, with an average monthly cost of $312 and an annual cost of $3,747. All of the companies researched show a cost between $243 up to $341. There is not a lot of variation here, unlike with the Dodge brand.

Most Expensive to Insure #3: Tesla

Next up is Tesla. While buyers love these excellent EVs for their luxury, usability, range, and reliability in most cases, their insurance costs are on the higher side, with an average of $271 per month and $3,248 per year. Again, there isn’t much difference here between the insurance companies researched.

Most Expensive to Insure #4: BMW

Last on the list is BMW. This shouldn’t necessarily surprise most people, simply because the brand is considered a high-end luxury and sports car manufacturer. Coverage for BMWs is 13% higher than the national average at $229 per month or $2,753 each year. There is little difference between the insurance companies, with only two, USAA and Travelers, showing monthly pricing below $200 per month, while the rest are above that price.

Least Expensive to Insure #1: Mazda

The least expensive car to insure should come as no surprise, as they are regularly ranked as some of the most reliable, efficient, and sporty cars on the market. That brand is Mazda. With an average monthly insurance price of just $138 or $1,658 per year, you can find monthly costs below $100 with USAA and Erie Insurance, with none rising above $120 per month.

The standard Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel drive is available on all of the company’s models, except for the sporty BRZ, alongside noted reliability and advanced safety features, which make buyers extremely happy.

Least Expensive to Insure #4: Honda

The last brand shouldn’t shock anyone either. Honda cars have long been considered some of the most reliable and longest-lasting vehicles on the road. With an average cost of $184 per month and $2,241 per year, the company’s models are also some of the easiest to insure on the road. The averages between providers are very similar here.
